19 Things We Should Do in 2019

  1. Be kinder to one another. On social media, on the train, in your local corner shop. Let someone get off the train before you. Give the shop assistant a smile. Think before you write something on the internet.
  2. Make a small lifestyle change to help our planet. There is a lot of pressure in the media to live a perfectly sustainable life; to stop using any plastic, becoming vegan and to stop buying fast fashion. We end up feeling guilty when we accidentally leave our Keep Cup by the sink and have to ask for Costa cup. Instead of feeling bad for not doing it all, just do something. Keep a reusable bag stuffed in your handbag in case you make an impromptu supermarket trip or have one meat free day a week. Small but mighty changes.
  3. Support your friends. I saw something floating around Instagram about the fact that Netflix didn’t advertise Bird Box but we all went to watch it after hearing about it on social media. Can we support a film the way we support our friends? Like their photos on Instagram and maybe even throw a comment their way. Go to their open mic night. Share their small business on Facebook. If we can support Netflix, surely we can support each other.
  4. Spend less time on your phones. We are all guilty of being glued to our screens. Set aside some time away from your phone. Instead of having it on the table in the restaurant, keep it in your bag. Read a book on the way to work instead of aimlessly scrolling.
  5. Move your body more. I’m not saying that you need to join a gym (I don’t even have a gym membership at the moment), but consider if you can walk instead of driving. Are you able to walk up the escalator? If you are lucky enough to being able to move, embrace it.
  6. Do more of what makes you happy. Whatever makes your soul smile, spend more time doing it. You like writing? Write. You like tap dancing? Find a local class. You like train spotting? Spot those trains! Put time aside for YOU.
  7. Moan less. Don’t get me wrong, it can be a good way to let out some steam from our stresses. But often we moan about things we are lucky to do. Instead of thinking I HAVE to go to work, embrace a feeling of I GET to go to work. It’s an easy way to a more fulfilling life.
  8. Keep a tidier space. I’m not a messy person, but I can be a little scatty. But a clearer space means a clearer mind and that can help you to be way more productive. Oh, and you can find things more easily.
  9. Get more sleep. Something I have not made a priority for the past 25 years of my life, but it is SO important for both your mental and physical health.
  10. Stop putting things off. We all have things we hate doing. We continue to put them off until it is absolutely essential, leaving us feeling anxious for weeks on end. But apparently if you do your least favourite task at the start of your day, the rest of your day can only get better.
  11. Drink more water. It’s good for you.
  12. Unfollow people on social media who don’t make you feel good about yourself. Comparison is the thief of joy, so either mute or unfollow people who don’t motivate, inspire or make you happy.
  13. Stop wishing time away. Instead of waiting for the weekend, for summer, for your next holiday, try and appreciate the here and now. Because once that time is gone, you can never get it back.
  14. Be thankful. If you’re into the law of attraction, you will know the importance of gratitude. At the end of each day, think of three things which made you smile.
  15. Have your five a day. I don’t really believe in unsustainable diets or health fads. But by eating your five a day, you know that at the very least, you are fuelling your body with all the good fruit and veggies it needs to run properly and help you feel in tip top condition.
  16. Find ways to manage your stress. We are a nation of stressy people, overwhelmed by balancing our busy lives. Find what works for you. Yoga, a bubble bath, talking to someone, or simply just taking a deep breath. Let’s get a handle on it.
  17. Do something for someone else. By doing something for someone else you are giving the gift that really does keep on giving as there is no better feeling than making someone else’s day. It doesn’t have to be anything big, but little gestures can mean the world.
  18. Take a risk. I don’t mean anything dangerous or potentially life threatening. But do the things you’ve always wanted to do. Life is too short not to. And 2019 seems as good a time as any.
  19. Don’t be so hard on yourself. If you have a day where you do nothing on this list, it’s okay. We don’t have to be our best every day. But we also don’t have to dwell on it. Put on your pjs, watch an episode of FRIENDS and start again tomorrow.
